We've learned that the UK quiz community has lost yet another of its highly regarded fellowship, with the death on Friday 23 March of Dick Cribb. For as long as I knew him - and that was well over a decade - he lived in Kent, but was originally from Brighton and spent much of his childhood in Hounslow. He later went to Liverpool to study at the University there. It was also in Liverpool that he met his future wife, Viv.
After University Dick had taught in Liverpool, his old pupils having included Dave Watson, the former England footballer and Everton captain (and briefly caretaker manager). The two had friendly contact after Watson's playing days, during which they remembered how, as his teacher, Dick had told Dave he should keep studying and get some qualifications, rather than assume he could make a living in football. And as Watson had recently been sacked as manager of Tranmere Rovers, Dave told Dick he'd been right all along as he'd now got nothing outside football to fall back on.
Dick's pal Ken Owen has kindly suggested to Dick's daughter, Sue, that she join the Quizzing group on Facebook, where she is now able to read all the condolences quizzers are offering, and their posts sharing fond memories of her Dad - including his seemingly endless supply of naff jokes (which he delighted in telling, in order to hear our groans).
We will miss our dear friend greatly. R.I.P.
[Edited 26 March. With thanks to Ken Owen for further information]
