Is it a book of writings by Nelson Mandela while he was in prison?

No.

Mandela did write his signature in it, to mark a passage as significant; the book is full of similar annotations by the ANC leadership.

Clue: It was disguised as a religious work so the guards would not confiscate it. It's literature.

Complete works of the Bard? It's the nearest thing in English lit to the Bible. Two books you might be allowed to bring with you on Robben Island Discs!

Thanks Andy. On a related theme, which writer propounded the theory that the "Mr. W. H." to whom the Sonnets are dedicated was one Willie Hews, a boy actor he suggested as first performing numerous cross-dressing roles e.g. Juliet and the lead character's wife in the Scottish play?

Time for a clue so: The writer who propounded this theory was Irish although his surname is spelled the same (but pronounced quite differently) as a prominent Estonian poet.

EQC participation brings its own rewards. Tartu has a statue (photo on request) of Edward Wilde having tea with Oscar

So Oscar Wilde is my answer

Yes Andy and there is an exact replica of that statue of the two Wildes in Galway donated by Estonia in 2005. I have now seen both statues close up! I hand the baton on with hearty congrats...
