Who am I describing?

An 18th century French mathematician, physicist and author, who wrote a commentary on Newton's Principia Mathematica, discovered that kinetic energy is proportional to the square of velocity, developed an early form of financial derivatives, and wrote commentaries on the Bible and penned other works on philosophy and science - but is probably best known owing to a relationship with another towering genius of the age.

It's one of two names that spring to mind: I'll go for Blaise Pascal, he of the mechanical calculator and the famous wager

Neil im mortified. Not only did i get the sex wrong but also the century. Apart from that i was close. Im pretty sure ive heard of this lady and she was one of voltaires squeezes but im darned if i can remember comment elle sapelle. If i can remember her sex century and surname simultaneously i might marry her neuter impersonal pronoun sometime soon.

Coincidentally this was one of the questions on Christmas University Challenge the other evening. The answer is Gabrielle Émilie, marquise du Châtelet, paramour of Voltaire.

Thanks Neil.

Which American artist was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism (the others being Marie Bracquemond and Berthe Morisot)?
