Nope, that was second.
It's a solo male singer.

Please tell me it wasn't Justin Bieber!

I'll guess at Rock DJ by Robbie Williams, which I believe just creeps into that time frame.

Thankfully it wasn't Justin!

And nor was it Robbie Williams either.

The answer is a talent show winner.

I'm afraid that curiosity got the better of me and I looked at Radio 1's web site so I cannot answer this question. However (and I hope that I do not give any more clues than you have given already!) I must say that there is something odd about this. As far as I can see, it was not trailed by Radio 1 as being the top 150 songs with worldwide sales.

They just called their chart "The best selling singles of the millennium". Surely, for that to be true, the chart should be prepared from worldwide sales. While I can accept their number 1 as being the top selling single in the UK, I cannot believe that it was a worldwide top seller. I recall recently that a Maroon 5 song was number 1 in the US for several weeks and, in view of the size of their market, I wonder how many copies it sold.

I have just listened to Fearne Cotton on the i player expressing her surprise at the number 1.

I probably have missed or misunderstood something as I rarely listen to Radio 1 now. In fact, my favourite presenters on 6 Music have said many times that Radio 1 (and Radio 2) had closed down after they joined 6 Music. They surely were not making it up!!

Another clue?

The title of the song is tree-related.

You have still not said if the chart was based on UK or worldwide sales. My post was a complete waste of time.

Based on EMon's clue it sounds like the answer may be Will Young and Evergreen. I recall asking a question in my local circa 2010 as to the biggest-selling single of the 21st Century in Britain up to that time and that was the answer back then ...

Oops, sorry, completely forgot to mention that it was based on UK sales, sorry inspectorbucket

Evergreen is correct. Think I'll stay clear of the Music thread for a while...

Not to worry Eoin -

Which two female vocalists share the record for six individual Grammys won at a single year's awards?
