Thanks to Andrew Frazer for some info on rail travel from London. Apparently this journey is one where Trainline.com throws up much higher prices than if you buy each limb of the journey separately. Also, the journey to Bury from Manchester Picadilly via Metrolink (tram/rail hybrid) is only 33 minutes (not 55 as shown on some websites).
