2006 European Quizzing Championships

Postby Chris » Sat Jan 28, 2012 6:18 pm

Whilst you're twitching, waiting for booking information about the 2012 event, I'd point you to THIS VIDEO on YouTube. It's the 'New Shoots' documentary, broadcast on Channel 4, that centred on the 2006 European Quizzing Championships event in Paris. Some kind soul has helpfully posted it for all to see, which is just as well because I can't remember where my DVD copy is  .

I'm very grateful for your "spot" Daniel. It has led to much discussion and reminiscence on Facebook.

EQC (except for national team quiz) and WQC are opened to everybody who wishes to come along.

Both are, ostensibly, 'Open' events and individuals will usually be permitted to play if they turn up at a participating venue. People without teams or Pairs can usually be married up on the day with similarly unattached players. National teams are selected by a variety of means (varying from country to country) and it goes without saying that without some sort of track record and history of attendance at events you are unlikely to find yourself playing in an established national team (not in England/Scotland/Wales at any rate).

Obviously people are asked to register attendance in advance - so we know to have enough paper sets available - and in the case of a European Championships there is some kind of package (typically with meals and accommodation included) that all but the 'locals' will buy into. The 2012 EQC is in Tartu in Estonia so anyone travelling there from outside that city/country is going to need somewhere to stay, etc. ...

For the World Championships each participating country organises one or more venues. In 2011 the UK participants gathered in a hotel in Lichfield. Lunch was included in the entry price (the venue was more accommodating to us when we agreed to purchase a meal for everyone on the day - they are in business after all) but any hotel accommodation etc. (where required) was left to individual delegates to sort out for themselves.

All the foregoing aside, just about anyone can turn up and play if they pay their entry fee. There is no qualifying standard. One of the nice things about quizzing is that we could any one of us discover we're sitting at the same table as the person who wins the title!

The only way you would not be allowed to participate is if you turned up unannounced and there were no question papers left (your own fault!) or you were, for whatever reason, otherwise personna non grata with the organisers (yes, like all sports, we have our pariahs!).

8-)

When is the event in Tartu?

9-11 November 2012, per the official (winning) bid lodged with the iQa. Chris
