Northants GP, 3 March

Postby Hofzinser » Mon Feb 20, 2012 1:49 pm

Hi there,

I am a complete novice to these events, but am a keen quizzer and am contemplating attending the event in Northampton on March 3rd. However, I have a few questions, and would be very grateful if anyone could help me out (and if this information is documented elsewhere, a pointer in the right direction would be much appreciated).

The main thing I’m after is really just a flavour of how the day pans out.

For the quiz in the morning, how does it work? Is it a written paper with people sitting as if in an exam hall? Or are the questions read out by an MC in a more pub quiz kind of format?

For the lunch break, is lunch put on by the organizers or does everyone do their own thing, or what?

For the afternoon team quiz, do you have to have a team planned in advance with other attendees (and thus if I was to attend by myself would I essentially be doing the team quiz by myself), or does this get organized on the day? (Or a bit of both, I guess!).

And finally, does the attendance fee go towards the organizational costs, or are there cash prizes for the winners? (Not that I’d expect to be even close to being among the winners but it’s good to know!)

Apologies for some very basic questions, but I am keen to get an idea of how everything works before attending so I’ll be very grateful to anyone who can give me a good idea of what to expect.

Thanks!

Jane and Chris are probably better placed to answer your questions.
However, the individual quiz is an exam-type quiz whereby you answer the questions on documents provided by the organisers.
The organisers supply the food and it is a good time to meet other quizzers and do a bit of socialising.
The organisers use a very elaborated software :D to create the team quiz by mixing players according to their levels, for instance a great master will be playing with a novice and a candidate master. The result is that the teams are evenly matched and usually the team quiz is rarely won by the same people.
For the prices you have medals for the individual quizzes and you got DVD or books type of prizes for the team quiz.
The event is extremely friendly and most of people come back the second time regardless of their results.

Changing the angle of the topic, will we be seeing an update of the rankings due to last month's event? (Not that I expect to have moved.)

Rankings etc. all done...

And, not that it needs saying, I'm very much looking forward to this weekend's Grand Prix. Nic Paul et al are always perfect hosts and the standard of quizzing as good as you'll enjoy anywhere in the country. It's also a day chock-full of quizzes, with some great stuff tacked-onto the usual programme, seeing folk quiz well into the evening. This is facilitated thanks to the Nic and other question providers, to the generosity of the venue, and the excellent grub available on the day, lunch buffet and evening curry (the latter solely for those who’ve place orders in advance!).

On the Individual Quiz front, there's a few milestones and potential milestones to note, having regard also to our most recent two GPs in 2012...

Of the 61 people who have, over the years, enjoyed a 'Genre' win, no fewer than four names have been added to the list in 2012. The January event in Coventry saw Iain Thoms (in only his second event) take Sport, and in Lifestyle, Barry Humphries shared the genre with Andy Tucker. Then in Altofts, Mark Walton won the sport genre and Lifestyle was again shared, this time by maiden-winner Anne Hegerty and one of the doyens of the genre, Chris Quinn.

Other milestones established at Altofts in February saw Kevin Ashman win the Art & Culture genre for an amazing 25th time, and in Civilisation Jesse Honey enjoyed his 10th win. Altofts was Jesse’s second successive GP win, so Northampton sees him on a hat-trick. There hasn’t been an occasion when one person won three in a row since 2010, when Pat Gibson twice achieved the feat (indeed, early in the year he took four in a row), although both Pat and Kevin did manage successive wins in 2011. Let’s see come Saturday if Jesse can become only the second person ever to enjoy a hat-trick of GP wins!

As if to prove the veracity of my comment regarding Chris Quinn and the Lifestyle genre, looking forward I see he is just one win short of tying Pat Gibson with a record 15 victories. It will also be interesting to see if anyone wins the genre outright. As mentioned earlier, the last two GPs have seen honours shared, and while that is in itself unprecedented, to see a genre shared three events running would be quite amazing.

Roll on Saturday…

My fault Chris, you didn't catch it because of my lack of punctuation. I meant to ask if Hofzinser had gone to the GP.

I know see that it reads as if the question was whether you'd gone Hofzinser, as it follows your post. It'll happen again, I'm both ignorant and careless when it comes to commas and semicolons etc.

I now see he did attend, so I'll change the question to - Did you enjoy the GP, Hofzinser?
